ABOUT AIDER
AIDER (Addressing & Including Diversity in Emergency Response) is an informal, umbrella group of disability and disaster focussed organisations and individuals who have come together as AIDER to focus on India-specific DIDRR.
COVID-19
In Brief
COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus. Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading. It is particularly important for people who:
- are aged 70 or over
- have a long-term diabetic, heart or pulmonary condition
- have a weakened immune system
- are pregnant
Precautions
Because it’s a new illness, we do not know exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person. Similar viruses are spread in cough droplets. So when someone with COVID-19 coughs or sneezes, their germs get in the air, on you, and on things. These germs then get into your body through your mouth, nose, and your eyes.
So stay at home and keep at least 3 steps (6 feet or 2 metres) distance from visitors if you must meet them.
Try to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth when your hands are dirty. Wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds. If there is no soap and water available, then use a hand sanitiser – it needs to contain at least 60% alcohol to work.
Coughing and sneezing into your elbow stops germs from going into the air and onto your hands. So cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze and put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.

TREATMENT
There is currently no specific treatment for coronavirus. Antibiotics do not help, as they do not work against viruses. Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms while your body fights the illness. You’ll need to stay in isolation, away from other people, until you have recovered.
- if you have symptoms, stay at home for 7 days
- if you live with other people, they should stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person got symptoms
- If you live with someone who is 70 or over, has a long-term condition, is pregnant or has a weakened immune system, try to find somewhere else for them to stay for 14 days.
With allergies, common cold or flu – fever, body ache, and cough are symptoms. COVID-19 symptoms are specifically
- a high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back
- a new, continuous dry cough – this means you’ve started coughing repeatedly
If you have difficulty breathing keep your government informed via free helpline 1075 or WhatsApp+919013151515 or email ncov2019@gov.in with details of your name, postal address, contact numbers, age, disability, language, symptoms, when they started and movements over the last week. Government health officials may take you in a special vehicle to a hospital for testing and additional care in case they feel it is not a common cold or flu.
Otherwise for most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness and you can manage symptoms at home. Take rest, drink plenty of fluid, use paracetamol to bring temperature down and manage flu-like symptoms (unless your doctor has told you paracetamol is not suitable for you)
